Take, for example, the automotive sector. They’ve been at the vanguard of automation for decades, and the results speak for themselves. Factories that historically needed thousands of people to create a few hundred automobiles a day are now cranking out thousands of vehicles with only a fraction of the manpower. And before you start pondering the job losses, keep this in mind: those factories are typically more competitive, more lucrative, and able to support high-skilled, well-paid professions that simply didn’t exist previously.
The Human Touch in a Robot World
So, where does this leave us? Are we rushing towards a world when industries run themselves while we humans sip tea and twiddle our thumbs? Not likely. The growth of technology in manufacturing isn’t about replacing human labour; it’s about changing their responsibilities. It’s about freeing up our workforce to concentrate on activities that demand creativity, problem-solving, and that indefinable human touch.

They’re no longer merely monitoring a line of workers; they’re synchronising people and robots, evaluating massive volumes of data, and making strategic choices that may make or break a production run. It’s a far cry from the clipboard-wielding foremen of yesteryear.

As we look to the future, it’s apparent that automation will continue to transform production. We’re already witnessing the advent of “lights-out” factories, capable of conducting whole production cycles with minimum human interaction. But don’t start planning your early retirement just yet. These facilities still need human skills for setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
And let’s not forget about the future frontier of automation. 3D printing, for instance, is revolutionising prototype and small-scale manufacturing.
